Excess elevation causes a reduction in the vertical loads carried by the wheels of a rail car on the outer rail of a curve. Track curvature causes lateral wheel/rail forces which, in the absence of sufficient restraining forces, will result in a wheel climb derailment. This report presents a low speed, quasi-static analysis for determining freight car wheel climb and rollover tendencies in response to combined excess elevation and curvature inputs. The vehicle types analyzed encompass North American rail freight cars with typical three-piece constant force friction damping trucks. Results are presented showing the tolerable limits of excess elevation as a function of curvature. Variations of the limits due to differences among major carbody, truck and wheel parameters are investigated. It is found that for loaded cars, c.g. height has the greatest effect on altering the limits of combined geometry while frictuon snubbing force has the least effect.
