Improvement of vehicle fuel consumption for global environmental protection and cost reduction for coping with high yen rate are two of the main challenges the Japanese automobile industry is facing. Thermal spray tecnology will play a more important role in the surface coating of aluminium alloys to reduce car weight and friction loss. But, for further progress of application to automotive parts, thermal spray processes must be changed to become better suited for the automotive production. Higher performance coatings, more cost reduction, and improvement of productivity are required.
