This chapter addresses some of the issues integrating control allocation algorithms as a part of the flight control system. The metals presents in the chapter considers from lessons learned while designing the flight control system for the X‐35. The chapter addresses several issues related to hardware and software implementation. When aircraft are designed with excess effectors, the typical under‐determined problem, the extra capability is there to provide for sufficient control power in the event of a failure scenario. The control effectors generate moments that accelerate the aircraft. Typically when doing aircraft dynamics we treat the aircraft as a rigid body. One of the main uses of redundant effectors is the ability to overcome the loss of control effectiveness associated with an actuator failure. A control allocation algorithm will simply use whatever controls are functional to attempt to satisfy the moment demands.
