The system includes a magnetic field sensor (150) measuring a stray field portion (144) of a total magnetic field (140) emitted by a magnetic wheel (110) that is magnetically adhered to a ferromagnetic structure (102), the stray field portion (144) including a portion of the total magnetic field (140) redirected by the ferromagnetic structure (102). A controller determines a change in a magnetic adhesion force of the magnetic wheel (110) to the ferromagnetic structure (102) based on a change in the measured stray field portion (144) of the total magnetic field (140).
