To determine if new air cushion vehicle might be suitable for use in public transportation, Port of Oakland sponsored Mass Transportation Demonstration Project; project was divided into Phase I, of approximately 6 mo duration consisting of planning and preparation for operations phase; Phase II included 12 mo of scheduled service, commencing Aug 10 1965 between Oakland and San Francisco International Airports and downtown San Francisco; data collection and evaluation program used during demonstration was developed by research team from Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering of University of California, Berkeley; operational and economic analysis, passenger acceptance and operating features.
