The invention relates to a method for determining a steering dead zone and for eliminating starting resistance in a vehicle having at least one steered wheel (5) mechanically connected to an actuator (2), comprising: a) starting from a first initial position (I1) in which the actuator (2) is in an intermediate position (M) and biased in a second direction, moving the actuator in the first direction, the first direction is opposite the second direction until a movement of the steering wheel (5) is detected at a first dead zone detection position (DB1) of the actuator (2); b) storing (508) an actual position of the actuator (2) at the first dead zone detection position (DB1) as a first dead zone value [theta] DB1; c) after reaching the first dead zone detection position (DB1), further moving (509) the actuator (2) in the first direction by a predetermined [theta] ESD1 first starting resistance elimination angle in order to make a predetermined movement of the at least one steering wheel (5) and further mechanical components connected thereto, reaching a first starting resistance elimination position (ESD1), the further mechanical component comprises at least one brake arranged for braking at least one steering wheel (5). The invention also relates to a system for carrying out the method according to the invention.
