The invention relates to a method for controlling a steering system (1) of a motor vehicle, the steering system (1) comprising at least one actuator (5, 8), each actuator having two redundant power packs, the method comprising the following steps: detecting a fault (9, 11) in the power pack of the at least one actuator and shutting down the faulty power pack; within a defined time, increasing the maximum output power of the normally operating power pack of the at least one actuator to a value (10, 12) higher than the rated power; and after the specified time, reducing the maximum output power of the normally operating power pack of the at least one actuator to the rated power or below.
