The invention relates to a method for controlling a steering system (1) of a road vehicle, in which the steering system (1) comprises an actuator (5) having at least two redundant power packs, in which the method comprises the following steps: a) detecting a failure and/or degradation of the power packs of the actuator and/or switching off the abnormally operating power packs, or detecting extreme load or short-term performance requirements; b) increasing the supply voltage of the at least one normally operating power pack of the actuator to a value higher than the supply voltage under normal conditions in order to provide a higher power output of the actuator than under normal conditions.
