A driving assistance system for a motor vehicle is provided, wherein the driving assistance system is configured to automatically control longitudinal guidance of the motor vehicle by outputting a desired acceleration to the motor vehicle. The driving assistance system has a first acceleration controller which is configured to determine a first desired acceleration of the motor vehicle on the basis of a predetermined first desired distance of the motor vehicle from a predetermined first object travelling in a same lane as the motor vehicle and directly in front of the motor vehicle. The driving assistance system has a second acceleration controller which is configured to determine a second desired acceleration of the motor vehicle on the basis of a predetermined second desired distance of the motor vehicle from a predetermined second object travelling in a same lane as the motor vehicle and level with the predetermined first object. The second acceleration controller is also configured to determine a third desired acceleration of the motor vehicle on the basis of a predetermined third desired distance of the motor vehicle from a predetermined third object travelling in a different lane from the motor vehicle and/or changing from the other lane to the same lane as the motor vehicle. The driving assistance system has a first desired-acceleration determination unit which is configured to determine the desired acceleration to be output to the motor vehicle on the basis of the first, the second and the third desired acceleration.
