The emergence of compressed natural gas (CNG) as a useful gas transport strategy to economically monetize natural gas is discussed. As an alternative to liquefied natural gas (LNG), CNG offers cost and operational benefits for gas-producing fields that lack suitable infrastructure for LNG. Natural gas can be loaded directly onto newly designed gas carriers from offshore production facilities, increasing safety and decreasing security concerns. The gas can be then compressed and contained onboard, eliminating the need for costly liquefaction and re-gasification processes. Some latest developments in CNG transport, including TransCanada's composite reinforced pipelines (CRLP) and fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) pressure vessels, are discussed.
