Soft skills drive business success. This chapter presents an unprioritized list of essential project management soft skills that are required for practitioners to reach their full potential and be a great project manager: leadership, team building, coaching, conflict management, trust building, negotiation, emotional intelligence, political and cultural awareness, decision making, influencing, communication, and motivation. Practitioner's individual professional development should be intentionally focused on these critical skills. The PM is a critical and visible position for project development and program delivery. Experienced PMs know not to confuse meetings with progress. Every meeting should have a purpose. There are generally five types of meetings a PM plans, leads, or attends. These include: status update meetings, information sharing meetings, decision‐making meetings, problem‐solving meetings, and team‐building meetings. An essential skill set of an exceptional PM's is influence management. The first step in effective self‐improvement and professional development is to be self‐aware.
